For Her Heart
is a sanctuary for women to nurture their heart health through self care.
Through education we help women move away from the stressful thoughts invoked by
heart disease awareness to the positive energy of cultivating heart health.

A primary focus of this preventive outreach is to help women reduce arterial inflammation

and maintain healthy blood pressure and optimal HDL cholesterol.

Arterial inflammation and HDL cholesterol . . .

  matters of her heart.

An HDL cholesterol level of 60 mg/dL is protective. A level equal to or below 40 mg/dL generates a higher risk of heart attack, heart disease and stroke. This is because HDL cholesterol has protective properties. HDL cholesterol removes excess LDL cholesterol and helps prevent LDL cholesterol from becoming oxidized (polluted).

When LDL cholesterol becomes oxidized a cascade of cellular activity brews in the artery. The artery becomes damaged and inflamed which stimulates platelet activity: much like a scab on a cut. The buildup of platelets (tiny blood cells) can loosen from the artery wall. These platelet fragments tend to travel along the artery and eventually cause a blockage. This type of blockage prevents oxygen and nutrients to reach heart muscle tissue. As a result the heart muscle cells die which then causes a heart attack.

Maintaining a high HDL cholesterol level significantly lessens oxidative stress and arterial inflammation.

Getting to the heart of the matter for women

In general a women of age 32 have a protective HDL cholesterol level of 63 mg/dL. After age fifty women tend to experience a dramatic drop in HDL cholesterol due to diminished estrogen. Women of age 60 in general have an HDL cholesterol level of 46.72 mg/dL This level is a few points away from a high cardiovascular risk category.

As such, it is especially important for women to nurture their antioxidant status and modify HDL and LDL cholesterol. The good news is this can be achieves through diet, exercise and stress reduction.
